Dentures are a life-changing solution for many people, restoring not only smiles but also confidence, comfort, and the ability to eat and speak with ease. However, just like natural teeth or any other dental appliance, dentures can wear out over time or suffer damage. Recognising the signs that your denture needs repairing or replacing is crucial for your oral health, comfort, and quality of life.
In this Blog, we’ll cover the most common signs your denture may need attention—and what to do next-
1. Visible Cracks or Chips
If your denture has visible cracks, chips, or even broken teeth, this is a clear sign it needs repair. Even small fractures can worsen over time and lead to functional issues or discomfort. Never try to fix a broken denture at home—DIY repairs very often cause more harm than good.
2. Difficulty Chewing or Speaking
Struggling to eat certain foods or speak clearly can mean your denture no longer fits as it should. This may happen due to changes in your mouth over time. The Denture Spa can assess whether an adjustment, repair, or complete replacement is needed.
3. Sore Spots or Irritation
If your dentures are causing sore spots on your gums or rubbing against your cheeks, they may be misaligned or worn down. This not only causes discomfort but can also lead to infection or inflammation if left untreated. Daily, we are presented with dentures that have been made incorrectly (teeth in an un-natural position, Over or under extension of the dentures borders, too many or not enough teeth on the denture etc) with an excessive use of denture fixative. Its my duty to ensure patients leave the clinic with the best possible teeth they can get.
4. Frequent Slippage or Movement
Do your dentures feel loose or slip out of place while eating or talking? Poor fit is a common sign your denture needs relining or replacing. As your gums and oral langmarks change naturally over the years, a once-perfect fit can become unstable.
5. Discolouration or Staining
Over time, dentures can become stained or lose their natural appearance. If cleaning doesn’t restore their look, you may want to consider a professional clean—as appearance equals confidence.
6. Persistent Bad Odour or Taste
Bad breath or an unpleasant taste can sometimes be caused by bacteria buildup in small cracks or porous areas in worn dentures. If cleaning isn’t solving the problem, this could indicate deeper issues in the denture material or hygiene habits, and a new set may be necessary.
7. Changes in Facial Appearance
One subtle but significant sign is a change in your facial structure. If your face looks more sunken or saggy, it could be because your denture no longer provides adequate support. This is a common sign that a replacement is due.
When to Repair and When to Replace
Repair: If damage is minor (e.g., a small chip or single tooth breakage), a same-day repair is often possible.
Replace: If the denture is over 5 years old, no longer fits properly, or has repeated damage, it’s time to consider a new set for your long-term comfort and oral health.
